Drinks To Avoid When You Have A Catheter

By Complete Care Specialist October 04, 2021

A urinary catheter is a hollow tube that serves a wide range of purposes. Catheters are beneficial for people with urinary incontinence or retention, problems with their prostate, or following surgery. The three main types of catheters are indwelling catheters, external catheters, and intermittent catheters.

If you have a catheter, there are steps that you can take to improve your experience and quality of life. This includes avoiding certain types of drinks. In this blog post, we will highlight the drinks to avoid, what foods and beverages can be useful, and other tips for living with a catheter.

What Drinks Should You Avoid?

Firstly, it's recommended that you drink plenty of water throughout the day, at least two liters per day. This helps to prevent infection and keeps your urine clear and flowing.

Drinks to avoid when you have a catheter include strong coffee and tea, excessive alcohol, and carbonated drinks such as cola. While you do not have to cut these out completely, it is a good idea to reduce your intake and always make sure to drink plenty of water.

In some cases, it may be recommended to consume cranberry juice as it can be effective in reducing the risk of urinary tract infections. Before taking cranberry juice, however, it is important to speak with your doctor. Cranberry juice may be problematic if you are on certain medication.

Tips for Living With a Catheter

Those using a long-term catheter have a greater risk of developing urinary tract infections and other problems. It is advised that you wash the area where the catheter enters your body every day using water and soap. If you must touch your catheter, make sure to wash your hands with water and soap beforehand.

Also, make sure to avoid any kinks in your catheter and ensure that collection bags are kept below your bladder.

As noted above, it is advised that you drink lots of fluids in order to stay hydrated. Your urine should remain a pale color. If you have any concerns, it is recommended that you consult your doctor.

Foods that are high in fiber can help you to avoid constipation. Fruits, vegetables, and wholegrain foods are recommended in your diet. Other foods that are beneficial include berries, garlic, probiotics (which can be found in yogurts, for example), and apple cider vinegar.

Many people only require the use of a urinary catheter for a short time, until they regain the ability to urinate on their own. For others, however, such as elderly people, those with a severe illness, or a permanent disability, it may be necessary to use a catheter permanently.
