While we have all become familiar with COVID-19 over the last year, if you have received a positive diagnosis it suddenly becomes more real.
Understandably, you may be concerned about the possible effects of contracting the virus. The good news is that most can recover at home and up to 80% of people only have mild to no symptoms.
Naturally though if you need to go into quarantine you may be confused about what to do and how to act.
Well, when in quarantine two things should dictate your actions. Let us break them down for you in our simple guide.
Prevent the Spread of COVID-19 While in Quarantine
If you know you have COVID-19, then your first priority should be to stop the spread of the virus. Take time to think of all those that you have been in contact with at least 2 days before you started to display symptoms or received your diagnosis. Then inform them so that they can go into isolation too.
This is a wonderful way of stopping the spread because as we now know, the less physical contact we have with people, the less chance there will be of it spreading.
While at home if you live with people and pets, your next step should be to isolate yourself from them. Avoid common areas and preferably stay in a separate room of the house. If this is not possible then be sure to wear a mask at all times and try to keep at least 6 feet from others.
Your dishes, cups, and cutlery should be kept separate from others in the home. This will prevent any cross-contamination when they are being cleaned.
If you cough or sneeze then be sure to cover your mouth, even when alone. It may seem like a minute detail especially when alone, but this stops any surfaces from being infected and lingering longer than they need to.
Another area to be conscious of is ensuring that you are cleaning all high-touch surfaces daily. This would include things such as door handles, counters, and switches. To aid this, try to wash your hands with soap and water often.
By carrying out these steps in quarantine, you can do much in the fight to stop COVID-19 in its tracks.
Focus on Getting Better
In addition to preventing the spread of COVID-19, you should also be conscious of how you feel and focus on getting better.
It is important to keep track of your symptoms. The most common include coughing, fever, and a sore throat. Over the counter medication, like acetaminophen, and any medications prescribed by your doctor can help manage your symptoms and help you feel better.
Similar to the flu, good rest and plenty of hydration will be your greatest help in getting on the road to recovery.
Should your symptoms persist or get worse don't hesitate to contact your doctor. Remember however that the CDC recommends contacting emergency services should you experience the following symptoms:
- Trouble breathing
- Constant pain or pressure in your chest
- Confusion
- Extreme fatigue
- Your lips or face turning blue
