Taking Care of your Mental and Physical Health during COVID-19

As of mid-October 2020, there are almost 40 million confirmed novel coronavirus cases. The world's been in a strange state ever since this virus started wreaking havoc all across the world.

No matter what degree of lockdown is occurring where you live, self-isolation and social distancing might be taking its toll on you. In these uncertain times, it's important to take good care of yourself.

Here are some tips on how you can take care of your physical health and mental health during COVID-19 and beyond.

Physical Health

The CDC recommends that adults get around 150 minutes of exercise a week. This comes out to around 30 minutes of physical activity a day, 5 times a week.

With the pandemic, some activities are tougher to do than others. However, there are plenty of solo things to do, such as walking, running, dancing, hitting balls on a tennis wall, and more.

Whatever you choose, it'll do good for both your mental and physical health. Not only can you blow off some steam, but you'll also keep yourself in good shape and get some release of those feel-good endorphins.

Here are some other things you can do to ensure you stay in good physical health:

  • Eat regular and healthy meals with plenty of fruits and vegetables
  • Take vitamin supplements, especially vitamin D if you don't get out much
  • Refrain from smoking or drinking, or reduce the frequency
  • Get plenty of sleep (at least 7 or 8 hours)
  • The more wholesome your lifestyle, the better you'll be able to fight off illnesses.

    Mental Health

    This unprecedented pandemic has everyone's mental health not in the best state. But thankfully, there are ways to ease your anxiety.

    If you're struggling, think about booking online appointments with counselors or therapists. These professionals can help talk you through whatever concerns you have and give you some healthy ways to deal with these things.

    If you don't feel comfortable with that, then set aside some time to talk with a trusted family member or friend. Who knows, they might just have the same thoughts. You can bond over these feelings and feel comforted, knowing you're not the only one.

    Other things you can do include:

  • Take up yoga or meditation
  • Pick up new hobbies
  • Take a break from social media and news
  • Get on voice or video calls with loved ones
  • Play games, either in person or online
  • Know that you aren't the only person that the pandemic's having a toll on. You shouldn't feel ashamed if you feel like you need some outside help.

    Take Care of Both Your Physical Health and Mental Health

    Taking care of your physical health and mental health is already important during normal times. Now that we're in the middle of a pandemic, it's extra vital that you do this.
