Managing Arthritis for Adults and Children

By Complete Care Specialist July 08, 2019

Arthritis is quite common. Usually, people attribute it to getting older. However, that is not always the case. Children are also affected by this condition. In fact, approximately 300,000 children are diagnosed with juvenile arthritis in the United States, according to the  Arthritis Foundation. Since July is Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month, it’s time to spread some knowledge and management methods so kids can be kids and play without worrying about excess pain holding them back.

Compression

Compression therapy is a process that applies pressure evenly over a painful or sore area while squeezing to support the veins. This method is ideal for both adults and children.

The pressure that is applied through Compression Gear increases blood flow, without slowing it down. Improving your blood circulation will promote healing. This ensures that blood doesn’t pool in the veins.

The compression process reduces swelling, which is also an advantage for arthritis. Different forms of compression clothing and gear make it possible to target the most painful areas:

  • Abdominal Binder
  • Ankle Compression Socks
  • Calf Sleeves and Wraps
  • Elbow Sleeves
  • Knee Sleeves
  • Wrist and Thumb Splint
  • Shoulder Wrap
  • Neck Wrap

Cannabinoid Oil (CBD)

CBD products aren’t hyped up for no reason. They really can tackle chronic pain that stems from arthritis. Your body makes its own cannabinoids, known as endocannabinoids), and certain receptors are related to pain and inflammation. When taking CBD, it helps the body use its own endocannabinoids more efficiently. A study that specifically targeted CBD for inflammation revealed that CBD gel significantly reduces joint swelling and pain.

CBD can be used for both adults and children, but of course, it’s always ideal to speak with your physician first. With children, it’s important to choose a CBD product with less than 0.3% THC, unless told otherwise by a doctor. Just like compression products, there are a variety of ways to use CBD.

  • Tinctures - You can apply drops under your tongue so you can reap the benefits faster.
  • Capsules - For people who feel more comfortable taking a set dose, capsules are a great option.
  • Salve - Apply directly to the painful area.
  • Lip Balm - Some claim that CBD lip balm can help with pain and anxiety

Watch Your Diet

While there is no specific diet that can cure arthritis, specific foods can fight inflammation, boost the immune system, and strengthen bones, according to the Arthritis Foundation

  • Fish - Omega-3 rich fish such as mackerel, salmon, herring, and tuna can help with inflammation.
  • Soy - Not everyone jumps for joy over fish. Thankfully, soy is an option as it’s high in fiber and protein.
  • Oils - Oils like walnut oil, olive oil, extra virgin olive oil, avocado, and safflower oils are ideal for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Cherries - The anthocyanins in cherries provide an anti-inflammatory effect.
  • Dairy - Unless you are intolerant to dairy products, be sure to get some low-fat dairy in your eating regimens like milk, cheese, and yogurt. Dairy is ideal for bone strength and the vitamin D that is in dairy is vital for calcium absorption.

Whether an adult or child is dealing with arthritis, it can be painful for anyone. Not to mention, it can significantly reduce your quality of life. Adults may find themselves not being able to enjoy the tasks they used to. Children may not be able to experience certain activities during their childhood and adolescent years due to the condition.

Thankfully, with a variety of methods to manage arthritis, you can take charge of your life again.
